What I do is start with an unmedicated chick starter (high protein= 20%) and cut it with grains and seeds. Make sure if you do this that you either have them on grass or give them something green for vitamins (like alfalfa). You can also use Flock Raiser (20%).
If I start with a layer feed- it is less protein to start with (16%) and then cutting it with other grains brings the protein level down too far.
(I do this for the purpose of avoiding GMO soy and corn (I buy the organic starter) and cut it with conventionally grown non-GMO products. This is cheaper for me than feeding all organic.)
Feed mills are the very cheapest.
