cheapest roof and siding options

steel for the roof.... You will never have to replace it .. I redid my shop, house, chicken coop and 3 large lean-to 's with steel all by myself.. I am over 60 years old.

I am a retired building contractor.

BTW roofing felt does not pevent leaks.. It is used to extend the life of the shingles by preventing the roof boards from absorbing the asphalt out of the shingles..

just consider how many holes you punch through the felt with all those roofing nails...

My wife went to Lowes for some tar paper and found they had opened bundles of shingles for 2 bucks a piece! They are from big time roofer companies that probably give Lowes any opened leftover material from jobs. It's costing me just $8 to shingle my 20' X 6' coop!

At 35.00 a sheet that is 1.09 a sq ft. for the T111. Find a local portable sawmill operator and you can probably buy board and batton for cheaper than that...it would look a lot better too.

hi !

We're redoing the original coop we have.. and creating a new one.
We have opted to use exterior grade OSB board and will paint it.
Additionally we're probably going to use either the the fiberglass corregated
panels available at Lowes, Home Depot or go with the corregated aluminum panels and afix to the rafters/eaves.

We are currently in the design stage for our new one... which we think will be 4 x 4 and about a foot off the ground.

We currently have one that is 2 x 4 about 4 ft. off the ground.

For a heater the past two years we made our own using a clay pot and clay drain pan. We took the clay drip catcher and inverted it; with construction adhesive afixed a ceramic wired lamp socket to it. We then drilled a hole thru the ceramic pot and fed a recycled extension cord thru it so we could wire it up. We screwed in a 60 watt bulb, covered it with the inverted pot and duct-taped it. Then you place it where you want it in the hen house and plug it up. Boy oh boy does it ever work!! 60 watts doesnt get too hot for the ceramic pot and it radiates a decent amount of heat too.

Take care!

Wow... $2.00 bundles of shingles! I will have to stop by one or two of the Lowes near my home to see if they have any deals like this. There are several Lowes stores within 20 miles of my home. I suspect they won't have a deal like this. You didn't mention where you are located. I am curious. Probably nowhere near me. How long ago did you find this deal? Recently?

I am gathering materials right now and roofing shingles is still on the list to buy. I am watching craigs list daily. I would rather not pay retail if possible. I need about 2 squares (200 sq ft) of shingles.

For siding I am just going to use plywood sheating and put a couple of coats of paint on it. (inside and out). I would like to use a nicer looking siding but it is not in my budget for this year.
