I have this Silkie that I had been saving for my breeding program. It is a split lav I hatched this past fall and I was sure it was a pullet. Well a few weeks ago it looked right at me and crowed and as if to reinforce the notion that is was in fact a boy it then did the mating dance to the closest hen. Now there are several mature roos in this pen so I know it is not a hen taking the role of a roo.

Anyway I have really gotten into beardless silkies. I know the ones with beards are more popular but i really like the look of a high quality beardless silkie better I just think they are sillier looking like a SG is.

since he is a split his color is not true but other than that I think he is a cutie and would have had potential to be shown if his color was correct. I would love opinions from all you silkie experts though

Funny think is that he does not have any streamers on his head either.

oh I have been hatching out more of these but now I feel as though I wont be able to acuratly sex them until they are mature which is going to be hard to do, any suggestions?

Unfortunately he's not a non-bearded, he's a half bearded. Breed him to a nb hen and you should get 50% nb, 50% half bearded.

I'm getting mixed up, is he bearded or non-beared?

He's a half bearded. The bearded gene is incompletely dominant, so without the gene, the bird will be non-bearded, with one copy, it will be a half bearded, and with two copies, it will be a bearded. The half beardeds have beards that are less full than a normal bearded bird.
