I’m hoping someone can help me. I have a small flock of chickens. I started my flock 2 1/2 years ago. I had 8 chickens, three different breeds. This last November I lost one of them, an Amberlink. She started to not eat and lost most all of her weight. In the end she wasn’t even able to move so I put her down. Now I have a second chicken, an Easter Egger, that is showing the same symptoms. Lethargic, not eating, when she out of the run she will just stand still and fluff up her feathers.
Could this be the avian influenza?
Any ideas.
Thanks Chester1960

It could be any number of things. I would not jump to it being avian flu at this time. Has she been laying eggs recently? Is it now very cold where you live? Can you feel of her crop, and tell us if it is empty and flat or full, and firm or puffy? Is her tail position up or down? Can you look over her skin under vent and elsewhere for any lice or mites? What are you feeding her? What do her droppings look like?

She’s has not laid any eggs in the last couple of weeks. I felt her crop and there is nothing in it. I have not looked at her vent yet. I feed the whole flock, Purina crumbles, miix with organic grains and black oil sunflower seeds. I treat them with meal worms every other night, a handful for the flock . They always have fresh water.
The weather the last few days has
been very cold. The others chickens are still laying as of today. Her tail feathers are sticking straight up. She just fluffs her feathers and doesn’t move much.

Photos of her and her poop?

She may be having some reproductive issues. I'd consider giving her Extra Calcium once daily for a week, see if that helps. You can find Calcium Citrate+D3 at stores like Walmart, CVS, etc. Give 1 tablet daily.

Work on hydration, encourage her to eat her normal feed. Check the crop in the morning before she's had anything to eat/drink.
Look her over for lice/mites and give her a going over for any signs of injury/bruising including the bottom of the feet.
