Hellloo from Batavia, a suburb of Chicago.
Last Spring my fiancé and I bought our first house. The first thing we did was start scrapping wood and materials to build a coop from scratch. I have wanted chickens since I was 5 years old.
A year later our original flock of 4 has been joined by 3 new pullets, and everyone is doing great!
We had an owl snatch the 4th baby, so we built a hoop house over the run last month. We plan to grow a grape vine to shade the run.
Chickens are my favorite animals now. I have a silver laced Wyandotte, Welsummer, barred rock and Rhode Island white in the older bunch. The young ones include an Easter egger, olive egger and Lav Orpington. Our gold laced Wyandotte was taken by an owl and we’re all still heart broken. But the Easter egger, “Chigusa,” has become very sweet since her friend left, and now is our friendliest hen.
Nice to meet everyone! I love seeing everyone’s coop designs and learning from others!
