I have 4 amerucana chicks that are about 3 wks old. Today one started to rub itself on the floor of the brooder, burying itself in the wood chips. It rolls on it's side and kind of scoots along. It doens't do this all the time. It seems healthy, it's eating drinking and walking around normal most of the time. Just this one odd behavior. Is this normal? I'm new to having chicks. Thanks!!

Almost sounds like it's developing the urge to take dust baths. Did it kick the chips everywhere, including on top of herself. Chickens love to take dirt baths, it keeps the lice and mites down.

Yep, sounds like a dust bath. They are so funny when they start that!

Thanks for the info. Yeah, they kick the shavings all over. They also peck the shavings off of eachother. Goofy chickens!!

Ahaha, I love it when they do this! If you really want a laugh, put that chick on a towel, it'll try the same trick there (I have no idea why they think they can, but they'll give it a good go). They'll let you tickle them while they're in the dust bathing trance. It's super cute.
