So this morning the kids and I went down to our local swap meet, planning on getting some veggie plants and then we were going to spend the rest of the morning browsing...

Well, we get about three rows up, and I hear chicks - so of course we had to stop. They had polish crested, all sorts of colors. I decided I could have two. Just two, that's it. So I let each of my boys pick out one chick, and off we went....

A couple more stalls down, more baby chicks. This time polish crested and silkies. I've read so much on BYC about silkies I thought, what the heck - two more won't hurt anyone.

And then a couple more stalls down, rabbits... Long story short I left with two rabbits.

So now I have 13 six week old chicks in one pen, and 16 little babies in another. I'm putting swap meet on my list of places not to go during chick season....

No FAIR! I have been checking our local swaps for chickens and chicken related items and found nothing so far this year! I need to go to some different ones I suppose....

Its karma I think - everywhere I go there's chickens....

On the downside though, my family is starting to question my sanity (I am a little too...), and I think my coworkers are planning an intervention for me.

I started with 8 chicks for me and 4 for a family member. After a few days I decided to keep all 12 chicks and share the eggs. Then I ended up with two Red Leghorns and decided to stop at 14 chicks ...........until I went to the feed store and they had EE chicks. Four of those brought my total up to 18. "Enough" said my hubby, but at the feed store they had a couple new ones and I now have 20 chicks. My husband is remembering that just this spring I planted 800 tomato seeds and I think he is worried.

We started out with 9 and now have 65, thanks to my chick addiction. My husband only brought home the first 9 and 2 more. I am personally responsible for bringing home the other 54.

Hubby is on guard now. Everytime I bring home anything special for him he just looks at me and says: " And how many chickens did you bring home this time." I was just being thoughtful! I haven't brought home chicks in at least 2-3 weeks - HONEST, lol! But, I DO plan on getting me some guineas soon, hehe.

With my chicks and juvies growing, my wife says it's time to start culling.

We had given away 3 hens and a roo.... they gave away the roo!...and their dog killed all three chickens.

DW says I need to give them at least four more hens... DS#4 says I need to make certain the place they are going is safe first... I tend to agree.

Since I have recently made 2 trips to the flea market and came back with chicks each time, my husband gives me a warning every time I go to town that I should avoid the flea market.

I sent him a text message last week that I found some pretty chicks at a feed store in a small town I happened to be passing through. (I saw the "chicks" sign in the window and immediately pulled over.) His reply was, "Don't do it."

I think he has me figured out. Despite his well-meaning advice, I did bring home 5 of them.

A lot of my chicks were straight runs, so I will have roosters to re-home soon also. I have already picked out 4 that I know for certain are roosters and chose only one to keep due to neighbors that may complain.

I agree with trying to find them a safe home, but there are no guarantees. You just do the best you can! I hope I can find safe homes for my roosters where they will be kept for pets and not for dinner!

I "had" a chick addiction going on,BUT after doing two different hatches in an incubator, buying some from our local flea market, and having a broody setting,...

I am SOOO tired. We went to the local flea market today, there was babies everywhere, baby ducks, chicks, bunnies, and puppies. My DH says to me before we even go in,...NO ANIMALS! No worries I told him, I am done. Its all fun until you work yourself into a frazzle. No more babies for me till I have grandkids! LOL! Have fun though!
