So I am now into day 3 of having my first group of chicks and I love just sitting and watching them. The love scratching in their bedding and getting it EVERYWHERE with a special fondness for their water dish which I now change twice a day. The other day a little fruit fly buzzed into the stock tank and the game was on! The all hopped on each other chasing and snapping at this fly for about 5 minutes. I was laughing SO hard! Eventually it flew out and they cheeped for awhile at the disappointment, but they sure had a ball with it.

My only complaint is every time I put my hand into the stock tank for a pet they run away from me. They will even all huddle up on the side of the stock tank with their faces pressed into the side like "Now we are invisible so she can't touch us!" Right now I'm figuring they are still scared from being in a big stock tank at the feed store with 30 other chicks and countless hands pestering them everyday, so I hold them for a little bit each day then give them their space. They seem like a pretty happy bunch of girls though. Next week I'm going to try introducing some treats (like yogurt and hard boiled eggs) and maybe make some friends.

I definitely will. I'm not usually a baby animal person since they are a ton of work (kittens drive me insane), but the chicks aren't hard to handle and very cute. I'm still more excited to have some pretty adult birds with colorful eggs though!

The way I figure it when baby chicks run away when u go to pet them , is that seeing this Giant Killer object that has 5 friends with it no less, is coming to scoop them up and Eat them. !

Have you seen them run full blast at each other then stop before they hit , then stand up Way tall , stare at each other , then " Chest Bump " yet ??

That's funny too.

try putting a little food in your hand and holding very still. let a little dribble out onto the ground. Do this several times and pretty soon one of the braver ones, usually a rooster will check it out and then it is a free for all. I also give them chopped up grapes, and then switch to a whole grape that I hold in my fingers for them to pick at. Also, when you pick them up, scoop them up from underneath rather than from on top like a predator would.

Sometimes for fun, I give them a tiny piece of colored paper and watch them play keep away. Enjoy your babies!

I've sort of done that before! I had 8 ducklings. I got a big piece of cantaloupe rind and gave it to them. It was so funny to watch. One would grab it, and run then it would fall and he wouldn't even notice until he stopped getting chased. Cochunk, I know right? Can entertain people for hours!
