I have a speckled Sussex bantams chick..one week old...that was having a problem with it's eyes getting matted shut..I was treating the eyes and giving nutri drench daily and it kept eating and drinking as normal...yesterday it started having problems where it was gasping for breath and this morning it was dead...I decided to cut it open to see if I could see anything..everything looks normal except for a very enlarged gizzard..at first I thought it was a large tumor but when cutting it open discovered it was the gizzard...the gizzard was massively enlarged even though it was not impacted at all...I have been trying to find something to explain this and could not find anything. I estimate the gizzard was about three to four times the size it should have been...moderately full of food...intestines had digested food running throughout...liver lungs intestines heart all looked fine..does anyone know what this could be? I am assuming the gizzard was pressing on the lungs and heart and this is why the chick didn't survive..but I have never seen this before.
