I have been using the Equine Fresh. Seems to be working really well so far.

:bun:old:yiipchick:yiipchick Greetings BirdPeople,, i read some of the posts about bedding for chicks, specifically wood shavings but i still have a question. i was using the hardood shaving until i notice little red pullet taking a dustbath in it. she had fine particles on her downy butt and tetra tint #2 was picking it off and eating it. doesnt sound like a good thing for their tummies so i removed all the bedding and replaced it w/paper towels. will eating some of these shaving hurt them? them seem happy enough. I have also noticed after looking at the tetra tint thread that one of my tets stands taller, has stockier legs and wont hesitate to peck at my finger and challenge me. is that a cornish trait, are they aggressive? i had chicks back in the 80's and some yutz dumped a big cornish hen in my yard one night, not the first time a chick got dumped over my fence. she was a real sweety but too fat and heavy to jump up into the coop so i built her a ramp. i have trouble using your site on my mobile phone so i may not get ack to you until i come to the library again. so im not ignoring anybody. thanks, quetz

Pine shavings are great, but not until the chicks are a couple weeks old. I have repeatedly lost chicks to choking on pine shavings within the first week or two. Use shredded newspaper until the chicks have developed enough to either fully swallow the shaving or be able to dislodge it from their own mouth. Something about the size of their beaks and the shavings do not mix at an early age. It may be that different shavings have different effects too.

Its only a problem if they eat a lot and get compacted. Grit helps with this. They are going to peck at/eat anything you put them on, including paper towels.

I prefer pine pellets over fine shavings. They are a lot less messy an don't have near the problems with the bedding getting in the food and water. The feed stores I buy the chicks from also use the pellets. I cover mine with paper towels for a few days but I am not sure if it is necessary or not. The feed stores don't have theirs covered.

When the chicks are about a week old I put a bowl Chick grit in the brooder.
