Hi,
One of my 7 week old chicks was killed on Tuesday from a rat. Today I found one of the two remaining with dried blood and closed up scratched on an around face as well as a drop of blood coming out of one nostril. As dramatic as it may sound it actually doesn't look too bad. I think the scratches on the face and neck are from the rat but why is the nose bleeding?

Other than that she looks, seems and acts really healthy. Eating, drinking, staying with her mother and acting normal.

Anyone have any ideas?

Sorry just an add on...

I actually think it could of been a stote that killed the chick and could of also possibly scratched the other chick.

I have now moved the chicks to a new safer place on the other side of my property for the day and they sleep with their mother inside. I will probably keep them like this until they are bigger.

Oh and... today I bought a stote instant-kill trap and a rat poison walk-in trap. Hopefully it will get rid of any rats and stotes that killed the chick.

sounds like you need to move the whole batch to some where safer that predators cant get into. rats will eat full grown chickens too. chew the toes right off as they sleep.

You already cleaned the blood up from their scratches a little right because you don't want it to get infected especially with rats. For the bloody nose if she is acting normal i wouldn't worry too much

thank you so much... I did clean up the blood and wounds and today all the dried blood is falling off. She still is acting healthy and happy do again, thank you.

I have had no problems with any of my adult chickens so I won't move the coop (My chicken are quite large and feisty and are rather defensive) but I have moved my two chicks and their mother to a safer place for the day and they sleep inside at night.

I have also bought and installed a instant-kill stote trap and a walk-in poison rat trap.

oh sorry... a stoat is like a weasel, like a long rat and they are really mean and vicious. Here is a picture
