chick born with one eye and cross beak

Clarabelle is a pretty serious case. it's like the right side of her face and upper beak got smashed down. i really am trying with her.....i don't know what else to do. did your chick eat on her own when she was days old? what was your care for her when she was very young?

I would syringe and dropper feed her when she was really little. I gave her poly-vi-sol (without iron) vitamins, yogurt, and her chick feed. Once she got the hang of it, and I was reshaping her beak, all went well. If she is that bad off already... I don't know... you can try... it is very sad. I hate to give up, but you don't want her suffering.

i have a chicken... not sure what it is... no eggs but no crows either. its a polish black and white speckled thing, it has crooked neck syndrome (i guess that is what you call it.) he does just fine, now that i think about it his little beak is a bit 'crooked' as well. but he does great with normal feeders and waterers absolutely no special treatment. he is a pleasure to have, he does make some funny noises if you spook him.

Good luck!!

I was going to ask if youve been giving some poly vi sol to keep her strength up-diluted a smidge with water and really fine chick food?? Like feeding a human baby their first rice cereal???

yes, i had been putting the Poly-vi-sol in the water. i attempted to feed her every day with little to no success. she got to the point of just peeping almost non-stop. lastnight i tried once again to feed her....she seemed to be excited for the food and i got hopeful, but then she wanted nothing to do with it yet again. but i would keep trying and trying. i put a towel across me and had to change my clothes afterwards.....what a mess!! lol...but i didn't mind, i just wanted to get some food in her. she also would never lay down to sleep....always stood up.....i thought that was strange. i even tried to clip her lower beak a bit....but i was afraid to go too far. well, my best friend (who grew up on a farm) offered to cull her for me today....so lil' Clarabelle is not suffering anymore. and i'm doing fine too.....it's not something you like, but sometimes you just have to do what's best so the chick doesn't suffer. i wonder if she maybe had something wrong with her lil' head/brain? cuz her right side did not look properly shaped....it was pretty smooshed down....i wonder if that's why she could never think to eat (being aided or not)? anyway, all is well.....i hope i did the right thing though.

You gave a chick a chance it never would have had without you. What you did was kind, compassionate and human, even in the end, and I see nothing "not right" about it. Most of us here have been there. Those little birds get under our skin in ways we never expected. If you're going to hatch chicks then this is going to happen and now you are better equipped to deal with it. I wish I can say it gets easier but it really doesn't. We just learn to deal with it better.

thanks everyone.....my mom told me about a lady who's dog had puppies and one was very deformed....imagine how tough that would be too.....

Im sorry you experienced it:-( Unfortunately it happens all the time when hatching. I had to cull another chick last night I hatched out 3 days ago-did nothing but lay on its side and peep wouldnt eat nothing-then I had a chick hatch out and dies shortly there after-I hate it but Im always preparred for the worst now... Like PC said its not that we become cold to these things..we can just spot it..know what will come next and do the right thing alot sooner...

thanks....yeah, i know it's to be expected....now i can put more focus on the other chicks that hatched....they are doing SO well! their crops are always bulging with food and most of them are SO sweet when i hold them....very calm and just enjoy sitting in my hand (or pooping in my hand! LOL).....they're beautiful too! i kept 6 but i gave 8 away to a friend. now i'll just see who's a roo and who's a hen out of the 6.....i plan on keeping 2 girls, so hopefully i'll get 2 pullets out of the 6.
