My chicks are one week old, a variety of breeds. I've been having some problems with getting the temperature right. (Have had lots of pasty butt going on...) I found one chick dead when I went down to check on them tonight. (Figures it's the $30 Lavender Orpington, the only one I had. :() After observing them I noticed that several of them (the silkies in particular) are breathing heavily. It is almost like panting, but not quite. Not all of them are doing it. The temperature is currently 86-88 degrees on one side, cooler on the other. (Not sure the exact temp.) They have chick feed (stuff I have used with my chicks for the past four years without problems) and plain water. (They had electrolytes and probiotics in it the first two days.) I did not have them vaccinated for anything when I got them. What could this be? I am REALLY worried about them. :( (Don't think I'll be getting much sleep tonight...)

Also, I picked them up and they don't feel extremely hot. A little on the cool side if anything. The ones who are seeming to have problems are not currently having problems with pasty butt. (Though they did at one point.)
