Chick Broke Her Toenail

My Black Pullet Chick tried jumping up on the edge of the tub where we have them and broke the tip of her toenail off. It was bleeding pretty good. The other chicks were pecking at it big time so I picked her up and rinsed her toe off. I applied Bag Balm on it and put her back. I watched her for awhile and the others left her alone. Did I do the right thing or do I need to do more for her?

if the bleeding is stopped she should be fine, but if the other chicks keep picking on her, separate her. ive never used bag balm for that purpose, but if it stopped the bleeding that's great.

Thank you loveourbirds. The other chicks are leaving her alone and the toe seems nice and clotted now. I'm going to wash it with a little soap just to be safe from infection and apply a little more Bag Balm it can't hurt. I panicked last night on what to put on her toe to stop the bleeding that would be safe and thats the first thing that came to mind.

i have used the bag balm for many things, but i really don't know much about it. its great that it worked, i guess i was just a little concerned about any medicines in it. we use corn starch to stop bleeding here and it works well. if the chickens ingest some of it i know there is no poisons.

im not an expert, this is just a thought.

I couldnt remember about the cornstarch to stop the bleeding all I could think of was babypowder and I knew that wasnt right. Bag Balm was originally used for cows udders. So I figure if the cows cant get hurt having it on them the chick would be ok.

We use corn starch to stop bleeding on our chickens combs, toenails, etc all the time. It works really well to stop the bleeding.

How is her toenail doing today?

It looks great just shorter. Shes walking around just fine on it too. I think it helps my son is pampering her lol. Shes loving all the extra attention.
