I have a 3 wk old chick that was unable to hold self up when hatched , curly toes and splayed legs .

I have hobbled the legs, taped the foot and toes and gave vitamins . He can now hold himself up with his legs under him but cannot stand with out support. He can stand in his cup because he can lean on the walls of the cup. He is eating up a storm, drinking and just wants to go.

I don’t know what else to do for him. He is getting stronger just no balance on one leg/foot.

Any ideas ?

How old was he when you did the corrections?

We've had a couple like that and the splayed legs have taken as much as 3 days and curled toes a half a day.

We had one that had splayed legs and sat on its haunches. After two days of hobbling with Vet Wrap, it still couldn't walk even slightly but sat on its haunches with legs in the air. So I put it inside of a plastic tube I had and put it standing up in the incubator overnight. It slept. In the morning, I took it out and saw now it had curled toes on one foot, but it could walk at least. We put a cardboard shoe on the foot using two-sided tape and a few hours later, the toes were fine and it was basically perfect. This chick was just hatched when we caught it and started treatment immediately.

The only thing I can think of is if yours has its legs in the right position, then maybe it just needs more exercise to get stronger. I'd keep up the vitamins. We use Poultry Cell mostly.
