Chick color, breed and gender

So i dont know if this works for cochins, but if it does its a rooster.....

see on Barred rocks, marans, and dominiqes can be sexed by how large the dot on their head is (and if any black is in it) and if it has grey wash on its legs, but according to this method its a roo

That only works for PURE barred rocks. Not cochins. And it isn't 100% of the time.

Barred rocks are easily sexed by their barring once they feather out (if he was pure barred rock his barring would be light for a male, dark for a female) They say male chicks have grey fluff where girls have nearly black fluff.

Oh and it's not the size of the dot, it's how irregular it is. The more irregular, the higher the chance of it being male.

Local "breeder" he had a large hatching operation. Only after I got it was I informed that the stock was questionable.

None of my cochins have vulture hocks

Where did you get the chick? It could possibly be mixed.

That's unfortunate. It does look like it has cochin in it, but it could be cochin x barred rock, or it could be a full cochin (regardless of the vulture hocks). Some times birds just have abnormalities without being impure.

I doubt that he would have been able to sex the chick for you. Honest people will just sell them as straight run, or be experienced in vent sexing.

It's too young to tell yet. If you are not looking for SQ, it's a cute little bird :) Hopefully it's a pullet. Post again in a couple of weeks. Nothing screams roo to me right now, and my four week old chicks have a couple out of them that really 'SCREAM' roo.
