Chick Days Rant

I was in atwoods yesterday looking for guineas cuz I was already in town. I endded up with some pullets and i'm thinking about going back for some bantams. while me and another BYCer where looking over the little ladys guess some of the breeds a kid that worked there came over and told us they where ALL THE SAME! they had like 8 breeds in the pullets alone. I turned to other ladys when they had gone and said " I bet he thinks pullet is a breed too"

most of the ladys have been helpful though

the tsc that is near me has one or two smart ones working there. I haven't gotten the pullets are a breed thing, so I guess I should count my blessings. one teenage girl that works there actually knew what some of the bantam breeds were, but she just used a little different terminology when pronouncing them. she called polish "poles" (only because she is polish and that's how she remembers them), and cochin "coaches". but I was at least impressed that she knew a little something. I almost wish they would pay me cash to work a few hours each day during chick days, just to help people with the breeds and what might suit their needs as far as what kind of breed they should get. I was telling the manager about RIR roos, and how they are great flock protectors when it comes to free ranging and letting the roam the yard, but as far as a good friendly family bird...maybe not so much. and explained our experience and other's experience with slightly aggressive RIR roos. anyways, then I explained about the reds being very good egg producers and someone should get them if that is what they are going for. I didn't know very much about the bantams at the time (but have been learning everyday since I bought some

).

I do want to go back, and tell that girl that the chicks I bought are not "poles" but mottled houdans. maybe I will keep my mcmurray catalog to show her the pictures of the chicks.

I wish they would inform their employees about what they are selling. so people get what they want and what is best for their lifestyle and needs.

and as for the cleanliness of the brooders...it's apalling what they let the chicks and ducklings live in "HELLO ADD MORE SHAVINGS SO THEY AREN'T RUNNING AROUND ON THEIR OWN POO!!"

well that's all I have to input. I am glad I haven't had such bad experiences as others, but only time will tell.
