I hate for this to be my first post on the forum after all my lurking! We bought four chicks on Saturday. All seemed to be well; chicks eating, drinking, running around, chirping. Tonight, I'd say about two hours since the last time I took a close look at them, one was dead. She was kind of twisted down by the feeder. I can't think of how she could have mortally injured herself. They have been in a plastic Rubbermaid with a light for heat. I had a 100 watt bulb in the first day, then a 60 watt, then back to the 100 watt because they seemed to want to hang around the 60 watt. It was 85 degrees in the box earlier today with the 60 watt.
Anyway, is it just one of those things? I don't think she was acting sick, but this is my first time with chicks. Do I need to be looking out for warning signs in the others? What do I look for?
Another thought: my little daughter (almost 5 years old) plays with them a lot. She is pretty gentle, but maybe something happened with her.
