Chick did not grow!

Hi, has anyone else had this problem. I had a chick that at 3 weeks weighed only 28g (just over 1 oz) compared to its brothers and sisters at three times its weight. It just ate off the floor and rarely from the feeders and was lively until this afternoon when it lay down almost dead. I ended out culling it. I've never had that problem before can anyone explain it to me please?

I have not experienced it but it sound like failure to thrive, it just happens. Good for you to do the right thing and cull.

X2...failure to thrive can stem from many different root causes....

Had the same thing happen to me with a little Jap bantam, never grew or really developed feathers, even after a lot of intensive care to get extra nutrition. Came home one day to find it dead under the heat lamp. Odds were something internally or genetically was wrong with it, just wasn't meant long for this world.

Mine had developed some feathers but not as fully as the others. It was always a busy chick too. It thought it was going to be one of those small good layers.

Underlying abnormalities that are not visible from the outside can run the gamut just as they might with humans. It also sounds like malnourishment may have played a part... though out may have been a symptom as much as a cause, meaning other conditions csused it not to eat enough, or it may have dimply bern a matter of not eating enougb and slowly declining
