Our little chick died today, seemed neurological. Not sure of cause be it Marek's or vitamin deficiency although I was giving it vitamins. It was a weak chick to begin with and needed help hatching and seemed stunted and not very active, though really sweet.

My question is, do I have to worrry about the eggs that I am currently incubating if it were Marek's? Do people suggest vaccinating their day olds, or is this necessary? Do I have to worry about them catching anything from the brooder, although I will sanitize it. My other thing is that I have 6 hatchery chicks coming 2 weeks after these hatch, is it ok to mix them with my chicks if I don't plan on vaccinating them?

Sorry so many questions, but I'm a little distraught. Had to tell my 2 children 4 and 6 and want to try and do it right this time!

No,It's not marek's, Some chicks aren't meant to hatch due to whatever.Any time you help a chick hatch it usually don't make it. You know the saying only the strong survie. Private flock it's not necessary. No, No,........

Thanks for the reply, I'm feeling much better. We have 4 little chicks now from the feed store that are doing well so I'm not a complete idiot or neglegent or anything.

Always make you feel so bad when something that you are taking care of dies.

The only reason I thought that it might be Marek's was because all of a sudden one leg started sticking out straight and the wing on the same side was drooping. Then within a half hour it could no longer walk and when you picked it up it's head was moving in circles like it was dizzy. It wouldn't eat or even drink and just lie there with one foot forward and one whole leg back.

I'm still curious if I should vaccinate my hatchlings at a day old. I have no idea if the chicks I have are vaccinated or not, they probaby are for coccidis (sp?) but not sure about Marek's. There haven't been chickens living on this land for probably 10 years, if that makes a difference.
