Our one little chick hatched and seemed healthy and active but died a few hours later.

I believe it was my fault...by accident of course.

Maybe the heat lamp too close to chick and it dehydrated ??? Perhaps I should have left it in the incubator/brooder instead of transferring to the baby bird "corral" with supplemental heat ?

going to leave other 4 eggs in to see if any of them will hatch.

In any case I have some more eggs set aside to start incubating.

So, I need to read back to basics...temp was between 37.9 - 38.4 during incubation cycle. Humidity was kept at 54 - 55 % during first 18 days and around 63-68 % during lockdown.

What type of flooring for newly hatched chicks ? My "corral " has wood shavings in it. Maybe an old towel or something for better footing ?

Lastly...fumigating ?? Does this mean with a Disinfectant like Lysol ?

This is an ongoing learning activity and I know at some point in time, I'll " have it right ".

I read that too about fumigating the incubator after a hatch, the instruction book said to use formaldehyde. :hmm I used vinegar and hydrogen peroxide mixture to clean out my incubator and so far it has worked.
Was the chick fully dried out when you made the move from incubator to corral? Technically they do not eat or drink(?) for 3 days, since they are still absorbing the yolk internally. As for bedding, I personally use wood pellets, I read to use alpine bedding, like for snakes. Once my chicks are dried out I move them to a 40g breeder with a controlled heater that maintains a 95°F temperature for the first week.
