Chick digging itself in soil?

I dig sitting on the porch and hearing that scratching and sifting of dirt flying up, too funny! I’ve been trying to capture the motion of the dirt and came close w/ the first one here. I’ve posted the last before but I couldn’t resist b/c she is so happy.

It's about 1 degree F out right now - those pictures of the chickens taking their dust bath made me feel a bit warmer for a minute. Our girls have been taking them whenever they can find some dirt in the snowy field. We made a box of top soil and ashes for them in their 'spa' but they prefer to go find a bare space in the pasture.

What I love is coming out to find them in the holes they've dug, all sprawled out in the sun sleeping, looking like a heap of dead birds!

Ours prefered to take summer dust baths after we'd dampened the dirt for them. We'd water bare spots, foolishly hoping grass would grow back, and then the peeps would converge and bathe as if this was their idea of paradise. Damp dirt. It was like watching a cat get stoned on catnip, as they staggered around wallowing in the dirt.
