my chicks are 5 weeks today, and still in the house because the coop is not finished, The dilemma is that they are driving me nuts, can not keep up with the dust, keeping them confined is a losing battle. my 9 leghorns seem to be escape artist. next year we will be letting mother nature take over, need some info on this, i have leghorns and production reds, correct me if i am wrong but i do not think either breed would be good for hatching. so i will be on the lookout for a hen or 2 any suggestions on a breed for this purpose?( at 5 weeks old they allready fly to places that i can not reach, swear they are laughing at me)

Buff Orpingtons and game chickens are great broodies. I have no less than 3 broody game hens every spring and at least one in the winter

I wish I had more leghorns

but I don't think I could do without the breeds I already have.
I hear silkies are great broodies too.

My Buff Orpington hens have tried to set like 7 times, but only two are still trying. They even hide the eggs when I come to collect them. Since people are on a waiting list for them I'm gonna have to buy eggs.

All good suggestions! Cover the brooder box or cage with wire to keep them from flying out.
