We have a chick, she’s probably about 10 weeks now, who doesn’t jump. Ever. She has another chick she kind of pals around with and when that one hops up on something she will peep peep peep until they’re reunited.
Have you ever seen a chick that doesn’t hop? She seems fine in all other ways and she’s so sweet. Just curious if you’ve ever seen it or had ideas on why…

If she seems normal in every other way, no obvious limping or leg weakness, she is likely afraid to make the leap.

Watch young chicks learning to hop onto things. They scope out the target, flex their "knees", aim their heads toward where they will make the leap, and then the execution doesn't happen until you can practically see the courage flood their muscles.

Chickens are like people. Some humans are willing to take chances and will go for just about any physical challenge. Others, would rather not take the risk. Same goes for chickens. Some are conservative in their willingness to take on leaps. Even adult chickens go through this gathering of courage each time they get ready to make the jump up to their perch at night.

Completely agree. We've had chicks that jump off the 3-foot wall with their momma and others in the same clutch stand at the edge and yell. She has to go up and walk them around the wall. 😂
