This forum is being started in hope to gather lots of information on down color and what developes from it!! I believe that if many people work together so that we are able to document some breeding and what comes of it, we Can help move the serama forward for those of us who want to develope certain color strains. I personally would like to work towards the COCOPOP color. This is not going to be easy but we do have some fantastic people on BYC that really have a grasp on chicken color!! In order to start identifying colors and what potentially can come from our clutches, Please post a pic of the parents of the chicks in question. I have goals and I have had a few people offer advise and help, but I by no means claim to be an expert in chicken color.. MY starting this Forum I hope to give others an idea of what may come when you pair one bird with another.. A chicks down color is a very good indicater of what will come.
* I think what would really be helpful is to identify what we see in the adults and apply what those breeding genettics paired can produce. This Forum will be interactive, if you post pics of your chicks , PLEASE re post pics at least a month laiter to others can see feather development. The ideal would be to see the down within the first week, then feathers at 4 weeks-8 weeks and 4 months!!

OMG dennis, that chick is HAWT!... and i rarely say that...

anyways... the down color and pattern tells you what it's going to be... before, i thought seramas were unpredictable when it came from chick color and adulthood... but nope, they are somewhat easy to tell when they are chicks... well, sometimes... they are like close to OEGB chick down colors and stuff...

Not really Gumbii, only a few are predictable...I wish they are as predictable as the oegb. For instance, I have 2 chicks with chipmunk down color pattern and one came out some what close to a bbred and the other is white mollted with some mahogany patches here and there.

These are the 2 I am talking about.
At a month old they looked like this.

2 weeks later, one had the mahogany coming in on his back and wings, the other had more white color spreading toward his tail.

Pic of them today. The white mottled one has some mahogany patches here and there, the bbred look a like has some yellow and white added to the redness.

See the difference??

WOW that is amazing, sooo do we have any people who are good with chicken colors who can start putting lables to some of the birds, even if there is no color reckognised we can find out what the bird carries!!???

Btw, those 2 are closely related....one is father by Brownii x Whitii's sister and the other is Whitii x Brownii's sister. Both crossing are aim to improve the type and tail setting.

Chicks in this pic are full sibling to the cockerel below. They look totally different from him when he was younger, he had chipmunk down at that age.

chipmunk isn't always BBred... it's also duckwings and quails too.... so if a chick has the chipmunk down, and out of nowhere turns into a laced or mottled quail, that's a tripy part... but yeah... most are pretty predictable...
