How long do I need to feed the chick starter feed to the chicks? Weird I know but when can they have just normal layer feed? because that would be when they could be turned loose with the rest of the ladies out there.

I feed the chick starter/grower until they reach 20 weeks, which is the average age for hens to begin laying.

I start to mix, starter and some grower at about 6 weeks and then ween them off of starter that way, until at about 15 weeks and then they are ready for freezer camp.

This is my first experience with raising chicks, but I'm going the same route chickmom is. When they reach the laying stage (I'm going with 20-24 wks), I'll transition them to layer pellets.

Think I'll start mixing theirs about 6-8 weeks like HoglundH because I'll need to get them out with the other ladies before they start laying and the other hens can't eat the chick food if we're going to eat their eggs
