With our first round of chicks we had a long slide top feeder. They stood on it a lot and we regularly pooping on/in it which wasted food. We sold our original coop and I sent the feeder along with it.

With more on the way I was wondering if anyone here had made a feeder they were willing to share info about that worked better for day 1 -3 wk old chicks and reduced the amount of wasted crumble.

Thru some searching I found this one http://cmfarm.us/ChickFeeder.html Has anyone tried something similar?

TIA

I once saw a feeder that was just a gallon milk carton with holes cut in the sides - big enough for them to fit their heads through but not big enough they could get in and poop, or bill the food out. Ingenious, free and takes just minutes to make.

I made a feeder with a coolwhip container and a pietin. I cut some holes in the bottom/side area of the coolwhip container then poked two small holes in the bottom and two small holes in the pie tin. Used a ziptie thingy to hold them together. filled with feed and put the lid on the coolwhip container. it worked pretty good. There still was some food that got knocked out of it while they were eating but no more then what happens with the feeder I bought at the store.

I tried doing a plastic jar with holes cut in it but i found small chicks can just about squeeze into anything their head fits in.

Mine threw lots of food out of their feeder. I put an old frisbee on the bottom of it to catch some of what they throw out. It gets a little better as they get older but they will still waste alot. Short of having a hole they have to stick their head into to eat I can't imagine how you could stop it.

Seems like I remember seeing one like that too. Will have to do some more searches and see if I can find it. Thanks

Oh serious! That could be bad.

There has been a frisbee in the corner of the mudroom since LAST summer vacation. Maybe I will have to utilize it.

Thanks all very much for your ideas. Gears are turning now. ;)

The feedstore just puts a long tray style feeder outside of their chicken crate and the chicks stick their heads out to feed-- looks like a very efficient way to go-- these are a week or two old though not sure it would work for very young chicks-- when mine come in 11 days I plan to try that ( I have a big wire dog crate for them)-- for the 6 older chicks I have now I am just using a little plastic feeder but the rim is covered to reduce spillage and it has oval openings in it for them to feed through but they still poop on it every now and then...
