Hello. Im new to the board, but I have a quick question. I have a hen (Silver Spangled Hamburg/Red Leghorn), and she hatched out her first brood of chicks about a week and a half ago. Im pretty sure the father is our Sumatra Rooster or the Andalusian Rooster, or maybe both. Anyways, this hen usually roosts about 15 feet up in a tree in our yard, and I was wondering when will she try to coax her chicks up there with her? Right now they have been sleeping in a dog crate on our enclosed deck, but Im assuming this won't last forever. The chicks are already capable of flights of a few inches, and the hen doesnt fly right up to her branch. She has a routine, and Im sure she will try to teach that to the babies.

Hi and Welcome to BYC!

I've never let my broody's hatch their own as they never "go there" at a good time for me, but I suspect it's only a matter of time before she'll convince them that the tree is the place to roost.

Is there some place you could keep them away from predators before this happens?

Sorry I'm not much help!
