Hi there,

I have a chick I found dead this morning, lying to the side of box under brooder, with one leg stretched out. Don't know what happened. Hope she wasn't stepped on by the others or overcrowded? Maybe it was too hot or too cold? Disease? Have 12 bantams and 6 large fowl in together, almost 2 weeks old. Any ideas?

I'm sorry that you experienced the death of a chick. It's possible that it was simply failure to thrive. The chick was likely not as ruggedly strong as the others and it didn't have the natural instinct needed to eat and drink as necessary.
It's always difficult to lose a chick, I have literally hatched several thousand chicks in my life and it still hurts when one dies, especially if I did everything I could to help it survive.
:hugs

yes, sometimes one is just weak .. one thing i have had happen about 3 times, once right in front of me, is a choking death .. got to be careful with what you feed younger birds, hard pieces that are too big and it can occasionally happen .. i keep them on strictly chick starter till 5 weeks or so, grows them faster also which makes it easier to integrate them to the herd lol ..
