Ok, hypothetically, on day 3 after hatching out 40 chicks you have to give half away.
You ideally want the most hens possible.

Which chicks do you give away?

List characteristics you would look for to KEEP as many hens as possible, and GIVE the roosters.

At 3 days old there will be no difineing male/female traits.

Significant comb and wattle development prior to 6 weeks of age are typically cockerels.

Some combos are sex linked. I'm no expert with sex-linked combos, but others on here know what combos give sex linked colors. Also, there are a few breeds that can be feather sexed within the first 1-2 days after hatched, but not very familiar to me.

ohhhh come on... really?

how about these..

Pullet
scared/timid/standoffish
hunched stance
chipmunk/heavy eyeliner
spends more time eating than watching you watch her
faster to get tail and wing tips

Cockerel
Outgoing/friendly/curious
thicker legs
Slower to feather out
watches you more, or stands around, not eating
tall stance

None are reliable methods of sexing very young chicks.

Interesting. Well that may explain why the last batch I hatched (primarily Marans) were all scared and panicked every time I walked by or reached in the brooder...and these EE are all happy and chirpy and come to check out my fingers... LOL
