Chick grit smells like mothballs

We bought some Dumor chick grit a couple of days ago to start offering to the chicks when we give them mealworms from Tractor Supply, but upon opening the bag, it smelled strongly of mothballs. Is that normal?

We do not want to give it to the chicks until we know if that is safe or not. We still have the receipt so can return it if necessary.

Ugh. I haven't fed my birds grit in forever! But I don't ever remember it smelling like mothballs...

I don't know. Grit is just crushed Granite, so it shouldn't have an odor at all. I probably wouldn't give it to them, though I don't think it would hurt them....

Better to be safe than sorry.

I just know mothballs can be toxic to some animals...so when we smelled it, we put it up and didn't give. I don't want to give them something harmful that could have been avoided!

Not sure our TSC would have a clue about it or not. lol! I can swing by there this week though.

I have never smelled anything like what you are describing. The grit i use has very little smell,if i had to compare it to something it smells like stones,if that makes sense.

That's what I figured, is that it should have no smell. This is very strongly smelling of mothballs. I will be promptly returning it. (I want to see if they have any easter eggers in anyways! Lol!)

Maybe it was stored near something. It should smell like fresh granite dust.
I buy mine by the pound from Agway. Super cheap compared to commercially bagged grit.
You are very wise not to give it to them.

Thank you very much! I just wanted to make sure, since i have never done this before.
I couldn't imagine smelling like mothballs was normal.

Exchanged it today. Opened the new bag at the store and it just smelled like dirt. The workers took a whiff of the mothball one we were returning and couldn't believe it.

So, thoughts...?
The same bag of grit that we thought was ok actually smelled a lot like mothballs once we got it home and it got mixed up a bit. So, we haven't been able to give the chicks any yet. Too worried something is wrong with it. :/

Well, went to Southern States today and got their brand of chick grit...It also smells like mothballs. I don't recall granite (or other rocks) ever smelling even remotely like mothballs...

I don't know what to do with it now. I don't know if it's safe or not. I really want to offer these guys and girls some treats. lol
