Chick Heating Method (Radiant Heat)

@aart this radiant heat is the cats meow. So easy no need to adjust heights either. Well it has worked extremely well and is now officially tested. Here is a picture of the 3 week old chicks. Out of the 17 hatched I sold 12 last weekend and keeping the 5 chicks left(4 Delaware's and 1 Black Jersey Giant) on the right side of the photo. On the left is the new Lavender Orpingtons that are hatching as I type this currently 4 in the brooder sound asleep. I think they are very content with this heating method. I had the heating pad on high for the first week and set to Medium there after.

@mbrobbins here's your Lavender eggs I purchased from you hatching away.
There are 4 in the clump but only looks like 2
with more still hatching.

So you set 'roof' high enough for 3-4wo chicks to fit under?

Nice brooder set up and lav babies!
I only do the roof set up to make the chicks feel more protected and clam. The first one I made with 2x6 blocks so with the 1" heating pan setup it leaves about 4" of space under top.
Now with needing two setups this morning I took the original heater prototype out of the spare pile and used that. It's a 2" deep foil tray so I made a roof with taller blocks about 8" for the older guys. I covered it with a heavy duty box that we got from Aldi's. Box fit perfect.

I use a heating pad the first 2 weeks under the paper at one end of the brooder box, so if they get too warm, they can move to the other end. they seem content. hope u get lots of Lav babes. (several years ago, I used a heating pad , set on medium, actually overheated malfunctioned, and when I smelled the smoke, found the chicks had moved to the otherside of the brooder, thank goodness i rescued them before it actually caught on fire.)

Would like to hear more about this @mbrobbins .
Did you figure out why the pad malfunctioned...was it an old one or...???

it was an old Sunbeam, I am using a new one now, I like them because they do not have the auto shut off, instead they have continuous heating, I now lay a towel between the pad and the paper or shavings, I also had an old one that melted the bottom of a plastic aquarium that I had baby parrotlets in, lucky then I caught it in time before any chicks

were burned. some will last for years, and some only a couple years. I keep one in my cat's sleephouse during the winter months under her bedding. She's used it for years

@Blooie posted some warnings about heating pads a few years back @aart Her husband is a fireman and he mentioned some to her. The one I remember is that if the pad gets old and brittle the wiring can break, short out, and cause a fire. There may have been other warnings, I don't remember.

Right, why I asked if it was an old one ;)
