A friend who raises BOs simply used different colors of nail polish on the hens' toes. That way she (and her kids) knew which hen was which. Tagged me on Facebook with a photo of a hen with a pedicure! Funny, but cheaper since most of us have a couple of bottles around somewhere. Me, I told my kids they get to name "their chicks" when the chicks develop feathers because it doesn't make sense to call one "Goldie" if it has brown feathers as an adult!

I've just started using coloured zip ties too. Seems to be working fine so far. No problems to report! Just leave them loose and keep checking them regularly. And don't use red ones - it might encourage pecking! And then when they're mostly grown you can get proper coloured leg bands for them.

In one of the chicken books they say to mark the chick's head with a non-toxic (Crayola type) marker. Just don't use red so the other chickens think it is blood. Same may apply for the nail polish.

how sad that would be for one to get picked on.
ill take all suggestions into account.we read the story of the chicken who was pooped on and brought into the house for a bath and was given a paint job on her nails.
didnt enter my mind to use nailpolish.
