Second Chicks

The new chicks have settled in and seem to be doing well. I guess their demeanor differences I was worried about in my last post are normal.

They all have names now. My kids chose names that they can keep regardless of gender. Except Pippin, that one is all me, lol.

So, I'd like to formally introduce:

Quinn (top)
Pippin (second)
Hashbrown (third)
Bubble (Bottom)

We think Quinn is a Mille Fleur d'Uccle, Pippin a black silkie, and Hashbrown and Bubble are Cochins, possibly partridge. Y'all know I'm new so I could be wrong, but those are my best guesses. They're a great group!

I love bantams.I used to be about bigger chickens, but now prefer the smaller ones. They are way cuter.

I've had people tell me that they don't have a point because they lay such small/fewer eggs. But I think the happiness they give me is plenty of reason to keep them around all on its own.

I do have a group of 6 arriving at the end of September. 4 BBS Orpingtons (a male and 3 females, I hope lol) and the Meal Maker and Homestead Helper free chicks from Meyer. I'm thinking that I'll be so used to these bantams the size of these new ones will shock me.

I get so many bantam eggs, and I much prefer their eggs. There's never any extra gunk in them like there can be in the bigger more rowdy birds. Plus I can keep twice as many bantam to standards. So win win. They make great incubators and moms too.

That was my thought too! These take to less space in the coop!

And they don't bicker and peck each other if you accidentally hatch too many.
