Hey there everyone.. today I had my chicks out in their tractor. Six chicks are almost 4 weeks old the other four are three weeks old. The first six are 2 RIR and four 'unknown', the four smaller ones are Barred Rocks.
They have all been going in the tractor daily this entire week with no issues. A little bit of pecking order between all ten of them but no serious pecking.
Today I put them all in and came in the house and promptly fell asleep due to a long hard day.
I went out just before dark to bring them in and one of the small ones is under the 2x4 frame of the tractor in a depression of the ground. All the rest are crowded in to the same corner. When I walked up it did not appear that they were picking on him, it just seemed as if he/she got crowded and was trying to get away.
Anyway, the feathers and down are gone off its back between the wings and the skin is pretty raw and red. It does not appear to be torn or broken, just very raw like road rash. I have her isolated now with food and water and she is eating and drinking and pooping. She seems normal other than maybe a bit sore from being under the wood.
Is there anything else I need to do? Is there anything I can put on the area to help it heal and feel better? I think the only ointment I have is Neosporin and possibly a triple antiobiotic ointment I keep for scrapes and bumps on the horses... Or just simple vaseline for moisture?
Also, will there be an issue with her being re-introduced to the flock after being separated for any length of time? I had heard that chickens can/will/might eat an injured chick, so I plan to leave her separate til she's well healed.
