Chick Injury?

In the Brooder

We got three chicks, a black sumatra, barnvelder, and blue orpington, in the mail the other day and the sumatra seems to be hurt. I think that she has a prolapsed vent that isn't too bad. However, the other two chicks pick at it every once in a while since it's a little red. I'm putting some Vetericyn and giving her warm butt bathes once a day.

Is there anything else I can do?

Use a red brooder lamp which can make it harder for the chick to see the prolapse. Put some honey or preparation H on it to help shrink the tissue, and prevent pasting of the vent. Make sure the chick is drinking well, and keep the brooder temp at 90 degrees F then decrease is by 5 degrees a week, always providing a cooler space to get to. Dehydration and overheating can add to pasty butt and straining. Here is a thread about the subject: https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/857614/help-prolapsed-vent-chick

Thank you so much! This is the first time we've had a chick with a prolapsed vent. I'll be sure to do what you suggest.

I agree with all the above. :)

Also, if the chicks are still picking at her vent, I would section off a corner of the brooder with chicken wire (still give her access to food and water, of course). That way they can still all see each other but they can't pick on her. She will protest at the separation, but it's for her own good...

How is she doing?

Thank you everybody for taking your time to answer my question. Little Cas is doing well and still has a little bit of her vent popping out, however it doesn't seem to bother her. We are putting Prep. H and are giving her little butt bathes once a day. She is very happy and the other chicks aren't picky at it anymore! Yay!

Thanks again and I'll let ya'll know if something changes!
