I posted pictures on a local facebook group to give my recent hatchlings away. We just hatched them for fun but don't have room to expand that much.

Someone commented on one of the pictures, "That's a roo". This chick is a backyard mix, Dad is barred rock, mom is either Amberlink or Production Red (can't remember offhand, though I have them marked). You can't tell this early, right?

1 week old. He/she is way to young, I guess maybe a comb growing this early could be a sign he/she is a roo but even then it isn’t always trustworthy.
If it is a sign, then all of my barred rocks are cockerels (which is possible I suppose). Their combs all look like that.

No its not possible to tell.
If the hen would of been the barred rock that cross would of produced sex links with the males being barred.
Maybe they were confused on how sex links work and assumed being barred meant male.

This little fluff butt was a Dominque mutt (the roo) crossed with a buff brahma (the mom/hen), looked very much like your little chickie, and everyone on BYC said she was a he, but SHE lays beautiful little brown eggs now.

Anyways, my point is, like others stated, its way too early to tell! I have some progression pics of a barred rock hen too if you're interested.
