Help, one of my four chicks (I just got them yesterday) is panting, or what I'd describe as panting opening her beak and leaving it open for a while, and has poop stuck on her backside. I've cleaned off the poop but when she goes again it just sticks again. Her poop seems to be watery too. Should I separate her from the rest of my chicks? Should I put some of the antibiotic in the water? Thanks for your help.

Try cleaning her rear and then putting a little drop of olive oil on her butt, sometimes that helps keep stuff from sticking. Try moving the heat source away a little, she may be too hot. Hope that helps a little.

Clean that bum, try the olive oil and check your temp in your brooder. It may be too warm. Bring the temp down a bit. Its amazing what keeping your chicks at the right temp will do!! Good luck

You can clean her up with warm water and mild hand soap on her rear. Just be careful not to get the chick's face wet, so you don't accidentally drown it. If it is really stuck or happens repeatedly, use some small scissors or nail clippers to very carefully trim the fuzz around the vent, and then rub vaseline on it to soothe the irritation and prevent any more from sticking. I also found that if I could get pasty butt chicks to swallow a couple of drops of olive oil after being cleaned, it helped prevent complications like constipation from not being able to poop while their butts were pasted. Oh, and if you get the chick really wet cleaning it, use a blow dryer to dry it off before putting it back in the brooder, so it doesn't chill.
