My 2 week old Lavender Orpington chick has discovered her wings starting to form. Every time I go over to the side of the brooder she tries to fly out, to the best of her ability. I just hope she doesn't hurt herself in the process. So for the time being I have made a little ramp up to a perch so it will hopefully keep her busy. I feel bad because she is the only chick I have right now and she must be lonely. But on the 22nd I am getting 3-4 more chicks so hopefully she will have some feathered company soon!

Young chicks need a cover on the brooder as they can often fly / hop better than adult chickens. Be sure it allows good air flow into the brooder.

Cover the brooder even when the chicks are young, because if they fly out, they won't go back in and can die from being too cold if you don't catch it right away.

She just started trying to fly out today so I was able to fasten a cover on top before she could get out. So I think it is nice and secure now for her to flap around to her hearts content, lol. Baby chicks are so cute!
