I came home from work today and one of my chicks is missing her foot. Not sure what got her - my horse attacked another chicken over the weekend so I don't know if he bit it off or what. Anyway....she seems to be getting around. Doesn't seem to be in pain (not sure how to really tell). I don't know what to do. My first thought was to "put her out of her misery"....but I'm not sure if she's in pain and really hate to do anything extreme if it's not neccesary.

Has anyone had this happen? What should I do?

Thank you.

She's a young (1 1/2 months) silver laced wyandotte. Should I put gauze on it or keep her inside in a cage?

Thank you.

As a vet, I hear this statement all the time. Chickens are a prey species. If they act like they are in pain (screaming or fluttering around), they would get killed pretty quick, so they hide pain. This does NOT mean they are not in pain. Think about this...if you lost a foot particularly from being bitten off, would you be in pain? I would cull her, sorry...
