chick mortality

About how old should the chicks be before they're at a safe age for making it to adulthood? ours are 1 ~ 4 weeks, and I won't let the kids name all of them because I'm afraid of lossing some. is it unusual not to lose any?

Mine are going to be 9 weeks old and I can only talk about mine since this is my first batch. I started with 12 from the feed store and lost one a few weeks ago I think to an impacted crop. There is always a possiblility but I would think if you made it past the first two weeks you should be in pretty good shape.

For the most part in my experience if they make it out of there egg and get into the brooder they have a pretty good chance of making it. I have had one die because it was trampled but other than that I've had pretty fantastic livability. You just have to watch for drafts and keep an eye out for pasty butt. At 1-4 weeks old I would say you're pretty much good to go.

I had 15 and have lost one a week. . . they are 5 weeks old now. I have no idea what is going on. I did Glenda's recipe for probiotic. I had them vaccinated when I ordered them. I'm clueless. I'm keeping my fingers crossed I don't lose anymore.

Let the kids name them. Just because a chick doesn't have a name wouldn't make it any easier if you lost one. It would be sad and a life lesson either way.
