Chick mortality????

Chick couldnt pip through outer (thicker) membrane... Anything I can do next time to prevent..... Temp ..Humidity..

Okay, you gotta tell me what you are hatching? The same thing happened to me too! It was with a couple Black Copper Marans. Boy that membrane is thick.
How can they break off the shell, but not the membrane. Mine was not shrink wrapped either. They just could not get through that membrane.

I think because my bator was dry, I had 11 red golden pheasants trying to hatch but most of them were having trouble hatching because of dry membranes. I helped each one of them hatch (very slowly over hours) and I saved every one of them. Reason I did this is a easter egger was trying to hatch, and was having the same problem. I let it go for about two and a half days, and it passed.

How dry was your bator? I was keeping mine at 70-85% depending on if a chick was hatching (it would go up) so that should not have anything to do with a thick membrane (at least that is what I believe) Maybe some breeds just have tougher ones???
Then again, I only had to help the two out. The other quitters did not pip. It was not because the eggs had not lost enough of moisture though, because when I cracked them open to see, the air cell was big enough.
I just don't know, I think it has to do with those tough membranes. But why are some too tough and others are not? Was the chick weak or the membrane to strong? Anyone have answers?

keep the humidity up and don't open the bator until ALL have hatched that are gonna hatch. It is OK to leave the hatched chick in there for 24 hours. I don't know if you were opening it during a hatch but that is bad if you do it a few times.
