Hi,
So you may have seen my post a while back where I was concerned that my hen would still be broody for eggs after adopting a chick. Well, thankfully yesterday she was ready to go out and took the chick with her. She's been doing a great job. Today they're out at 50 degree weather, I've just noticed the baby (1 week old) will chirp because it's cold but yet won't try and get under mom. Instead it just sits on her back and keeps chirping. Is there anything I can do to get baby to go under her?

That’s normal. The chirping is the chick communicating with mom not because it’s cold. Despite what a lot of people think, 50F isn’t too cold for such a young chick to be running around outside. I brood all of my chicks in an unheated barn with a brooder plate. I also usually let a broody or two raise chicks every year. The chicks will spend the majority of the day not under heat any heat. The chicks raised by a broody prefer to sit on the broody’s back during the day if they are not running around.I have gone out there when it is in the 30’s and none of the chicks are under heat all running around playing. I also never have sick chicks and the only time I have had a chick die is when they were shipped arriving sickly dying within a day of arrival.
