This morning when we went out to feed our 6 week old chicks I noticed that one keeps stretching out its neck and opening and closing its mouth. It's eyes close alot during this as well. It was silent. I got a medicine dropper and dripped water into its mouth which it appeared to enjoy. It kept opening its mouth for more. It is still opening and closing its mouth and won't take food and occassionally makes a little tiny squeak noise now that I gave it the water.

Does anyone know what is wrong? What else can I try to help it? It does not appear to be in distress...yet.

I had this happen with a respiratory illness, but it may also be gape worm. In my case, the brooder light was too close/enclosed and the temps skyrocketed. The chicks were too hot and developed respiratory infection. We lowered the heat, and treated. Some died, some lived, I used an antibiotic powder in their water which helped. The thing I believe helped most was Poly-Vi-Sol drops 3 times daily.
