Chick pecking new duckling, any way to get along?

I have a week old chick who is the only one to survive and has never known anything but solitary life. I just hatched a duckling, hopefully the first of a few. I only have one heat lamp/tote brooder and was hoping to keep the babies together but the chick is rather mean and keeps pecking the duckling. Feet and eyes mostly (the latter is what worried me).
I've only had them together supervised so far, but chick seems determined to make the newcomer go away. I'm using a red heat lamp but there is some natural light.
Is there any way to curb the behavior or will I have to separate them completely?

yes.. damage could be done.

I would worry, watch, and if it keeps on separate them.

A brooding setup can be a few cardboard boxes picked up for free from a store (bulk grocery or liquor stores always have some) cut and tape smaller ones together if you need to. a heating pad (that does NOT have an auto-shut off feature) is a great way to keep them warm, and maybe you already have one around the house.

I am against brooding ducklings with chickens because of the potentiometer threat of death or injury to the chickens when the ducks are grown. If they grow up together they will think they are the same species. A duck mounting a chicken = a squashed chicken.

Of course right now you have the opposite issue. ... the chicken pecking on the duck.

I have them.in the same brooder currently, but with aawire "fence" separatin them. They can see each other but the duck can get away from the pecks if necessary. It doesn't seem to want to though, lol, wants to snuggle chick!
I'm pretty sure the chick is curious, not looking for food, but "new object" so to speak. I'll see what happens like this for a couple days and only put them together under supervision. If it doesn't work I'll set up separate brooders.

I think it was just curiosity. After one night separated but able to see each other, the pecking stopped. However, I think I will get them each a friend or two. I'm concerned the duckling isn't eating and I'm wondering if he's lonely. There was another egg that pipped and strteds zipping at the same time but died part way through, so maybe this little guy misses his friend? The chick has always been alone and it doesn't seem to bother him much- he's thriving.
Even with me, the duckling isn't too snuggly and I was the first voice and face he experienced so I would have assumed he would have imprinted.
