Chick Pics at 18 & 25 Days Old!! Caution - Lots of Pics!!

Love the pics. I was wondering if my BOs were looking normal. All seem to be in different feather stages although all born Feb 16th. Your pics answered it for me-they are normal. Thanks for posting the pics.

Mallory...our original number was 8, and we were going to order from Meyer's, but they were out of EE's..somehow turned into 22 LOL.
thanks blue_egg_lover <---- I can't WAIT to see the eggs the EE's lay!!!

kelidei - it's great!! we had just 1 crate set up which worked until about 2.5 weeks old, but they are much happier now w/ 2. It's also such an easy way to add roosts and entertainment!

maclady - I've been a bit worried about my BO's bc their combs started growing before anyone else, but now there are a few others that are around the same size. They should be pullets, and they are both growing at the same rate so I'm really hoping they ARE pullets, esp since they are our friendliest girls!!

halfwaynowhere - thanks! it was fun figuring out names, though towards the end we kinda stopped with the breed/name thing - also with multiple G breeds (Gwen, golden campine; Ginny & Gaby - grey silkies...LOL) it also fell apart. Oh well, it was fun anyway!!

Thanks Pacysgl5 for posting this,

Visually you have answered questinons I was going to post in my own thread. Namely how much space I was going to need when my order of 25 goes in. Do you think you are going to have to expand more before they are big enough to go out to the coop? I am trying to determine what rout to go for a Brooder setup. Right now it looks to be about four feet long by two high and two wide is that right? I am going to be ordering about the same amount of gunieas eventually. So this setup would work for each. I want the chickens to be out in the coop before the Guineas even though they will be in separate coops and runs.

Right now I have none.... The coop isnt even built yet. LOL. I have raised chicks and guineas before just not soo many at a time.

Thank you for posting the pics of the age progression!
That is so helpful to see.
Mine or only a little over a week old, so they are still fuzzy butts running around.
I have RIR's, BA's, BR's, and EE's (of course); and I also just added some older Silkies and d'Uccles that are just adorable!

My setup is just like yours, except I only used one crate (never thought of using two).
I have another crate in the shed; I shoulda used both of them. Oh, well... next time.

I plan on moving them into the shed when they're old enough.
I will set up my dog x-pen out there with cardboard around the edges for draft prevention (kinda like what they're in now - just way more room).
I have some deer netting that I can put on top to prevent them from flying out while they're out there.

Again, thank you for posting the pics!

hi perchie.girl - the double dog crate is definitely going to be large enough for a few more weeks! they have a ton of space. I like that we kept them in 1 to start with though - the one crate looked HUGE when we brought home the babies. It would have been a bit harder to maintain the 95 degrees the first week with so much space. I think it's more like 4' x 30" x 30" - closer to 3' wide/tall. I will say, having the brooder on the pool table was a leg-saver - we had the original 1 crate on the ground, and seriously my knees were getting so sore from kneeling everytime we visited the brooder (and this is on carpet, and I'm young...LOL). So that didn't last long (maybe 3 days) before we lifted the crate onto the pool table.

AlienChick - no problem! it's amazing how quickly they grow! 1 week old! Just babies! I love seeing their feathers come in though. I might miss the little fuzzy butts, but I almost like this stage better because they each have great personalities and it's neat to see what they are going to look like grown up. you can always add a 2nd crate if you want! we did, when they were about 2.5 weeks old (the oldest). Didn't take too long and it was time to add fresh pine shavings anyway...but it sounds like you have a nice plan for getting them more room.

We are still working to complete the shed (KMFX it'll happen this weekend) and we MIGHT try out a heat lamp out there and see how warm we can get it (this saturday it's drop the temp to 80 deg day). If warm enough they might go on out there early. Oldest babies will be 4.5 weeks old, others will be 3-3.5 weeks old, not fully feathered by any means, but they'll be warm and they'll stop making our basement so freakin' DUSTY! Argh! LOL...

Not sure if I'm ready to send them to the big girl's home though...
