i has a broody hen sit on 5 eggs. When 3 hatched, she abandoned the other 2. I just so happened to have another broody so I put the eggs under it. One hatched yesterday. The other has piped, but has been stuck that way for hours. I wouldn't worry, but when I went out there this morning the broody had switched nests. The egg was abandoned. I put it back under the hen, but I don't know how long it was alone. The egg is piped and chirping. Do I help it or leave it under the broody chicken and hope she doesn't move again?

Do you have a guess as to when it would have pipped externally? if it's still chirping then it's at least not dead. it could be anywhere from 24 to 48 hours from external pip to hatch. (though 48 hours is only if it pipped directly to the shell not into the air cell)

Leave it for as long as you can. The possibility of complications with an assisted hatch are high. Give at least 24 hrs before considering helping. If the hen abandoned, do you have an incubator or a way of keeping it the right temperature? That would be the only intervention I could see at this point.

I checked about 8am this morning and the shell has a small whole but the membrane is still intact. I was just afraid that the membrane may have dried out since the hen left the nest. It is currently back under the broody. Not sure how long it was out.

No, I don't have an incubator. I have been going out every few hours to make sure the broody is still on it. How long does it have before it suffocates?

with a pip in the shell it wont suffocate. other things could happen, but don't try to help until 8 am tomorrow at the absolute earliest.
