seriously wishing this was t my first post after joining this community but as a new flock mama of nearly two years I’ve decided to hatch some eggs of the rooster we lost(so we have limited amount off eggs from him)
I put 16 eggs in the incubator, of those all but 3 were no longer viable so were exposed of.
The last 3 in the incubator hatched all one day apart.
The first chick did very well after we washed with warm water and put back to fluff up in the bator.
Second lipped at the pointed end and drown in a matter of no time.
The third attempted but failed.
The remaining 10-14 eggs we knew were fertilized by the rooster we had lost (these are the last of his babies!) and tried to allow the hen to sit on them to hatch them hoping she’d have a better hatch rate….
Well yesterday went out to a hatched chick in the nesting box and another pipped with its face visible. I went back to check on the other chick that had pipped and the hen was just sitting there staring at it on the ground in front of the nesting box doing nothing to help it so I picked it up brought it in to find its insides were hanging out of where the yolk sack should be so we culled humanely.
When I got out to the coop this morning she had another pup started with half its face exposed and visible so I decided to keep a closer eye on this one.
Left an hour and the hen had done the same thing except this time the chick was very actively attempting to move around doing the new chick flopping they do so I picked it up and decided to bring it into the incubator but it’s leaking yolk from somewhere?!
I have it in a small dish with some dampened paper towel at the bottom of it as well as applied antibiotic ointment to the chicks belly/egg sac area.
I think mom pulled it out of the egg too soon and it hadn’t absorbed all the yolk and then either she, the new chick, or this baby ended up ripping open something and she’s been leaking yolk since.
I’ve been keeping her in the incubator in the dish but she’s rather crispy( fathered are drying funny) so would like to be able to bath her to get her properly capable of being mobile.
should I give it food and water since clearly it’s losing essential nutrients from the yolk leaking?
Do I have to tie something off if so what’s it look like? I have pictures that will be posted on here as well in hopes of finding a solution to hopefully help this beauty survive!
Mama hen has her 1, 2 day old baby as well as one egg she wasn’t willing to give up. The rest are now in the incubator with the chick.
First 2 pictures are baby when I found it this morning before giving it back to the hen.
Third picture is chick after found, cleaned off with saline solution, a bit of iodine then rinsed off the iodine with saline solution, added a massive glob of antibiotic ointment (pain medication free) lined a small dish with paper towel, wet it down a bit then added a small amount of coconut oil to the paper towel as well as the baby’s vent.
Fourth picture is the paper towel that was under the chick in said dish while we were doing a change out on the paper towel as is was clearly covered in yolk as was baby again so had to wipe baby down again but it’s feathers still seem crispy. Should I use some dawn dish soap? I’m worried I’ll pull something out of place.
5&6 are of baby after we cleaned it up again and put it back into the incubator.
Please what do I do to save this baby?!
