Asking advice on whether or not i should help my chick that pipped on the wrong end. It has been 20 hrs and has been breathing, peeping, and looks like it is trying to move but it can't. I peeled away a piece of shell only but nothing has progressed. It moved earlier and a tiny bit of blood was visible about 4 hours ago. Is 24 hours the magic number to wait it out before helping?

when they pip the wrong end it may take longer because they make the "internal" and external pip at the same time and usually they wait up to 24 hrs after the internal pip to make the external pip. As long as you see movement, it seems to be getting air and the membrane doesn't look brown and dry it should be ok. If you feel the need to assist you can always check out the " hands on hatching thread"

Thankyou very much! The membrane is a little tan at opening but chick is moving and breathing well. I guess I'll just sit tight!

One time one of my broody hens' eggs pipped at the wrong end. I don't remember it taking any longer though. The chick hatched fine, although I admit I was super worried for a little while! :)

Had one pip the wrong end this morning. Could see movement at times but all was still at other times. Chick hatched just now and appears to be doin fine.

Update: after 30 hours and no turning or zipping I removed shell in a zip line but chick still could not break out. Membrane was very rubbery so I tore little bits until it pushed out. A loud, fiesty little chick is doing great!

I'm glad the little one is doing well. :) I had one pip the wrong end in my last batch about two weeks ago, and I also had to break the shell a little more and put a small hole in the membrane. It then was able to get out and there hasn't been any problems.
