Chick self grooming

We love nipple waterers! Our chicks are 5 weeks now and I got 2 of these chick nipple waterers below when they were 3 weeks because I was changing out their water multiple times per day due the bedding being kicked in and them pooping in their water -even with it raised up on a block of wood. These come with a bracket holder to screw into a wall as well as a metal bracket. Mine wouldn’t use the new nipple waterers though until I took away their gravity waterer. After one used the nipple the rest followed with no problem.
Thank you. Mine are 5 weeks and I just switched today. They are getting it but not making the water drip out. Seems to be okay.

I was told I could use barn lime instead of grit what are your thoughts?
Have you heard that you can use barn lime instead of grit? They told me I could at the feed store.... true or not?

Barn lime is not grit. It can be used sprinkled sparingly in the coop to help with odors.

Grit is Crushed Granite - it's an insoluble form of grit that birds use in the gizzard to grind up/process foods.

Could the store have been talking about Oyster Shell? That can be given free choice to help supplement calcium when birds are in lay.

Both Oyster shell and Granite Grit should be offered free choice - meaning place it in the run and let the birds pick up what they need.

Where are you located in the world? Sadly, most feed stores - especially chains, the employees do not know what certain products are nor do they know the purpose of the product.

I'm in southern WI . The guy owns the store I'm going to let him know. People shouldn't just say things that they don't really know.
